Zera is the main antagonist of Dweller's Empty Path. He first appeared in Escaped Chasm. He is shown to have a strange fascination with Yoki, and is the one responsible for the nightmare that initially wakes her up.
Appearance[]
Zera has long, blond hair, that goes down to around his waist, and usually covers his face. He has two large, elf like ears that stick out sideways, and large black horns that point up. He wears a red cape with a large chain on it.
Personality[]
Zera is mainly calm and conceited whenever he's present, and is extremely confident. He is shown smiling most of the time, in contrast to Yoki's general lack of expression. Zera is highly manipulative, with Yoki saying that he has attempted to get her involved with his schemes several times before. Zera's completely obsessed with Yoki, going so far as to keep a room empty in his house for her at all times. It is unknown why he is so interested in her, though it is implied that it has something to do with Yoki's strange power, and some sort of predetermined fate.
Zera is also fairly sadistic, bordering on psychopathic. In Escaped Chasm, he is shown to visit a decaying world purely out of curiosity. He also delights in giving Yoki nightmares and disturbing her sleep, saying that it "shows [he] cares". Yoki's first instinct is that Zera is behind the increase in Beast-Type attacks, suggesting that he frequently causes trouble. When asked by Yoki to spare the Heroes, Zera refused to promise anything (although, it is revealed he did indeed spare them as Yoki can visit the Heroes when returning to the Castle Town Inn). One of the servants in Zera's house also suggests that he kidnaps (and possibly hypnotizes) people, saying that he "acquires" them. The Dragon also mentions that Zera has created Dragons multiple times for the sole purpose of being destroyed by Yoki.
One of reasons that he seems of cause trouble seems to be the fact that he seems to depend on attention being given to him. If Yoki decides to ignore Zera for the whole playthrough, Zera will take high offense to this. When Yoki arrives at her house in this run, Zera seemingly bars Yoki from going anywhere else or getting Claire's aid. After this, he scolds Yoki for ignoring him and gives her series of nightmares just because of this incident. This is a prime example of Zera's attention seeking behavior.
Zera also seems to highly value his own privacy. Despite having given orders to prepare a bed for Yoki in his house, Zera's servants will not let anyone enter his room, "not even [her]". Furthermore, if the player wall hacks or otherwise finds a way into Zera's Room, they will be confronted by him face to face. After calling the player rude, he then forces them back to the title screen. This may also explain why one of the rooms in his house shows the player Yoki's Nightmare and then turns Yoki back out of the room, being a way to further protect his privacy.
Abilities[]
Extreme power: Many combat capable characters, including Yoki, Claire and Aimottle have admitted they wouldn't be able to take Zera in a fight, implying that he's incredibly strong.
Nightmares: Zera is able to give people nightmares. It is implied he has to be nearby to the sleeper to do this, though this may not be required. He gives Yoki nightmares several nights in a row, causing her to suffer insomnia.
Creation: Zera is said to have "made" both servants in his house and Dragons out of energy, though it is unknown how he does this, or what limits he has on this power. As stated by one butler though, his familiars are bound to the crystal in his manor's basement, implying that they were created out of its energy.
Magic Resistant: Despite Claire putting enough enchantments on the forest to cause ordinary people to get lost even after the enchantments are broken, Zera has no trouble reaching Yoki's house at any point. He may even have been the one who broke the barrier.
Flight: At the end of Escaped Chasm, Zera rises into air just before opening the portal.
Dimension Crossing: In Escaped Chasm, Zera was able to cross over into a decaying dimension, and even bring the Lonely Girl back to Yoki's World.
Teleportation: In both Escaped Chasm and Dweller's Empty Path, Zera is shown to fade in and out at will. This could have to do with his dimension crossing abilities, but if he was able to teleport to places within a dimension as well, it would explain how he could bypass Claire's enchantments.
Potential Reality Manipulation: In the "Zero-Zera" Ending, Zera slowly traps Yoki in smaller and smaller areas as she returns to her bed, forcing her to go to sleep and have his nightmares. It is unclear whether this is actually meant to be Zera's power or simply an effect to force the player forward, as Yoki makes no mention of this entrapment and merely states he has an "intimidating aura".
Trivia[]
- Zera can be found over an inacessible cliff while playing as Woof. Upon interacting with the bottom of the cliff, she will exclaim his name happily.
